Milly Spooner, Cheek Slimming Facial Muscle Toning Exerciser, Becoming The Ideal, 2015
This year Spectrum Photographic have partnered with Photoworks to present Debut Award; a fantastic opportunity to support emerging talent. We are delighted to announce recent University of Brighton graduate Milly Spooner as the winner of the first edition of the Debut Award. Milly wins £500 cash prize and an interview with Photoworks. Her winning series: Becoming The Ideal was selected by a panel of industry professionals: artist Simon Roberts, artist Clare Strand, Programme Curator at Photoworks, Mariama Attah, Director of Photography at Flowers Gallery Chris Littlewood and an Associate Curator at the National Media Museum, Brian Liddy.
Becoming the Ideal is an exploration of cosmetic consumerism within contemporary culture, especially within the way fashion and advertising industries have carved out profitable commercial niche markets based on the intangible ‘need’ of accomplishing an ideal body. As a result, a pursuit of ‘buying’ beauty has become an integral part of contemporary society. Often, this can result in further dissatisfaction with one’s own body image and personal imperfections.
The resultant images feature Milly with a deadpan gaze, which reflect a deeper exhaustion with the unrealistic ideals of beauty. What’s even more unsettling is the the ambiguous cosmetic aids she is depicted holding, which further undeline the laboured construction of femininity.
