Glam-punk images feature in Autonomic Tarot, a collaboration between writer David Keenan and artist Sophy Hollington.
The pair have combined forces to create a 30-card linocut tarot deck and instruction booklet.
Published by Rough Trade, Autonomic Tarot retains an umbilical to tarot’s archaic roots.
Yet, at the same time, it future-visions it as a glam-punk portal deep into the Now.
The deck accompanies, and was born from, Keenan’s experimental novella To Run Wild In It.
To Run Wild In It
To Run Wild In It is a book about tarot, an experimental novella and a ‘channelled’ text all in one.
It extends the ideas first broached in Keenan’s acclaimed debut novel, This Is Memorial Device.
Taking the maxim that the best way to understand the tarot is to create your own, Keenan reimagined the deck as the unfolding of parallel stories alive with uncanny oracular detail.
He collaborated with Hollington to create an accompanying deck.
Drawing on influences as diverse as Charles Olson, Jack Spicer, Aleister Crowley, Allen Van Newkirk, John Waters, Laura Branigan and Iggy Pop, To Run Wild In It ranges across ideas of art, magick, synchronicity, pop music, dreams, visions, poetry and experimental prose in an attempt to map the possibilities of spontaneous inspiration.
It also functions as a tarot workbook.
Deeply personal meditations on the cards’ archetypal energies are combined with an intuitive and highly original re-engagement with their divinatory potential.
It is also a book about books, an Oulipo-style literary gambit blurring the line between art and magick in an experiment in poetic consciousness.
David Keenan and Sophy Hollington
David Keenan grew up in Airdrie in the late 1970s.
A senior critic for The Wire, he is also the author of two books: England’s Hidden Reverse and This Is Memorial Device.
Sophy Hollington is an illustrator and artist living in Brighton.
Most of Hollington’s commercial work takes the form of relief prints, created using the lengthy process of lino-cutting.
Her personal work tackles themes from meteoric folklore to mannerism.
She is interested in wrangling the most out-there ideas to make them tangible.
Autonomic Tarot is available to order from Rough Trade Books now.
Spectrum Photographic worked with Rough Trade to produce the limited edition A3 Giclée prints of the cards.
Rough Trade Books is a new publishing venture in the mould of the pioneering independent record label.
It aims to bring the same original spirit and radical direction to the world of book publishing.
