Photoworks Festival is hosting a Festival Unboxing in Brighton on Friday, November 25.

The event is an opportunity to get a first glimpse at Photoworks Festival: From Little Acorns….

It will see curators and creatives opening the new Festival in a Box for the first time at Brighton CCA.

Once they discover the artists inside, they can stage the work in their own imagining of the festival.

Curated interpretations will take place in RESOLVE Collectives installation Summer House.

Photoworks Festival in a Box

Festival in a Box is an experimental festival model promoting accessibility, sustainability, and agency where the audience becomes the curator.

It was created in 2020 in response to the pandemic and restrictions on movement.

This year’s festival pushes the format further with the box used as a live research initiative.

Photoworks wants to learn how biennial festivals can embody accessibility, explore open-ended curatorial approaches, and embrace a multiplicity of readings.

Over 12 months, the new Festival in a Box will be staged in galleries, homes, offices and found spaces around the world.

From Little Acorns…

Photoworks Festival: From Little Acorns… takes Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower as inspiration.

The dystopian climate fiction novel is set in the not-so distant future.

It acts as a starting point for thinking about who we are and how we can shape the future.

From Little Acorns… presents ten international contemporary artists including:

  • Mohamad Abdouni
  • Antony Cairns
  • Felicity Hammond
  • Josèfa Ntjam
  • Johny Pitts
  • Ebun Sodipo
  • Harit Srikhao
  • Diana Tamane
  • Anshika Varma
  • Charlotte Yonga

It also includes international partnerships with FotoGarten Thailand and Yaounde Photo Network Cameroon.

Festival Unboxing

The Festival Unboxing takes place from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, November 25, at Brighton CCA.
