Kate O’Neill will be in conversation with Gordon MacDonald for our next Spectrum eXchange IG Live.
The talk on January 20 is an opportunity to learn more about the art of black and white hand printing.
A discount code will also be given out at the end of the event.
Gordon MacDonald
MacDonald rediscovered his love for black and white hand printing during the 2020 lockdown.
“Something about lockdown made us enjoy these solitary things,” he says.
“I remembered how much I love printing. How much you can do in a darkroom with a print and realised how wasted those skills are.
“I thought it would be a nice idea to reclaim it and bring some of those skills back.”
In recent years, MacDonald has perhaps been best known for his publishing work.
He was the founding editor of Photoworks magazine and co-founded Brighton Photo Fringe in 2003.
He was also co-founder of visual arts publisher GOST and is half of the collective MacDonaldStrand, with his wife Clare Strand.
Black and white hand printing at Spectrum
Spectrum Photographic teamed up with MacDonald in June 2021 to launch a new black and white hand printing service.
The partnership with MacDonald allows us to offer traditional black and white process and printing services to our clients.
Spectrum Photographic takes all orders for black and white hand printing and delivers the finished product to our clients.
MacDonald prints from his darkroom at the MacDonaldStrand studio.
He also offers bespoke advice to artists and photographers using the service.
This service complements Spectrum’s existing printing services.
