In Between Gallery: Feiyi Wen

Fabrica’s In Between Gallery is currently showcasing a striking image by Feiyi Wen.

The Untitled from Under The Yuzu Tree will be on display in the gallery window until March 2018.

Under the Yuzu Tree is an ongoing project in mixed media, including Wen’s family archive, photographs, ephemeral texts, letters and video installation.

She is constantly seeking traces of the uncertain identity of her own family history.

This investigation takes place through the fuzzy memories of family members’ oral stories.

“We had a great response to the call out but felt Feiyi Wen’s image – and the rest of her work – showed an interesting perspective and focus,” said Mick Watson, from Fabrica.

“The selection panel also thought that the image would look particularly interesting in the window space and I think we have been proved right.

“In fact, it looks even better than I imagined.”

Wen’s grandmother was born in the capital of Manchukuo, the puppet state in Northeast China during the Japanese occupation.

Mixing different material and testing the blurry distinction between documentation and fiction Wen attempts to put the fragmented pieces of history together.

In Between Gallery

The In Between Gallery project, sponsored by Spectrum Photographic, is a temporary gallery in the Fabrica window.

It showcases contemporary photographers ‘in between’ the main exhibition programme.

“We launched the In Between Gallery in order to better use our huge window space,” said Mick.

“The window is used during exhibitions as part of the branding of the show and last winter we used it to show artists’ films but we wanted to experiment with it further as it’s such a large space that faces busy Duke Street.

“It also gives us the opportunity to work with artists that we wouldn’t ordinarily work with as, although we do show photography from time to time, it’s not something we’re especially known for.

“It’s been really well received.

“I’ve had nice comments sent to me, our Instagram community loved it and it’s fun seeing people stop in the street to fully take it all in.”
