Spectrum hosts exhibition for Brighton Photo Fringe

Spectrum Photographic is hosting an exhibition for the opening weekend of Brighton Photo Fringe.

Do Not Bend: Photographers Photographed by Bill Jay is on outside Frederick House from Friday, September 28, to Sunday, September 30.

The exhibition includes 16 of Jay’s black-and-white portraits shown on rotation.

During his life Jay photographed more than 2,000 photographers, including some of the greatest artists of the past century.

Curation of the work for this exhibition was undertaken as part of the film Do Not Bend: The Photographic Life of Bill Jay.

Bill Jay

Bill Jay was a photographer, writer, advocate, editor, lecturer, public speaker and mentor.

He was the co-founder and first editor of Creative Camera magazine (1967–1969) and founder and editor of Album magazine (1970–1971).

Jay established the first gallery dedicated to photography in the UK – Do Not Bend Gallery, London and was the first Director of Photography at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London.

While there he founded and directed the Photo Study Centre.

He went on to study at the University of New Mexico in 1973 before founding the Photographic Studies programme at Arizona State University in 1975.

He was the author of more than 20 books on the history and criticism of photography, four books of his own photography, and roughly 400 essays, lectures and articles.

The Institute of Contemporary Photography, New York awarded Jay its prestigious Infinity Award in 2008.

His photographs have been widely published, including in a solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

His archive is held within the Centre of Creative Photography, Arizona State University.

Brighton Photo Fringe

Brighton Photo Fringe 2018 launches on September 29.

The free photography festival runs all over the city and across Sussex from Worthing, to Lewes and Hastings.

It is on until October 28. A full programme of events will be announced shortly at photofringe.org.

Do Not Bend: Photographers Photographed by Bill Jay is on outside Frederick House, Frederick Place, Brighton.

Opening hours are as follows:

  • Friday, September 28, midday to 5pm (display one)
  • Saturday, September 29, 10am to 4pm (display two)
  • Sunday, September 30, midday to 4pm (display one)
