Photographer, documentarist, and digital storyteller Daniel Meadows has dedicated his life to capturing British society, using a collaborative approach to highlight the extraordinary in everyday life through photographs, audio recordings, and short films. In his latest exhibition, he partnered with Four Corners to recreate a once-lost showcase that had toured galleries and community centers across Europe, ensuring its revival for a new generation of audiences.
Shuttles, Steam and Soot was first exhibited in 1978, as part of the Half Moon Photography Workshop’s radical programme of affordable, portable, plastic-encapsulated touring shows. The project set out against the backdrop of a declining industrial landscape, and Daniel Meadows began documenting the life of the mill and speaking to the people who worked there. From retired weaver Bessie Dickinson, to engineer Stanley Graham, flue cleaner Charlie Sutton and steeplejack Peter Tatham, he created a remarkable portrait of Bancroft Shed’s workers and their disappearing trades.

Spectrum was delighted to work on such a poignant exhibition and encapsulate C-type prints to match his original exhibition. It was such a great project!
“Four Corners is grateful to the expert team at Spectrum Photographic who have created the replica exhibition, which is based on the Half Moon Photography Workshop’s original laminated touring show.” Four Corners
This extensive exhibition was made possible by a National Lottery Heritage Fund project, which supports the development of Four Corners’ archive collection and expands access to its history for new audiences. With the generous backing of Mid Pennine Arts and Super Slow Way, the exhibition will continue its tour, returning to Lancashire over the next 18 months.
Shuttles, Steam and Soot by Daniel Meadows is on show until Saturday March 29th at Four Corner, Bethnal Green London. Admission is free.
