Lee Miller: A Major Exhibition at Tate

This Autumn marked the opening of Tate Britain’s most considerable UK retrospective of Lee Miller’s photography, celebrating her as one of the 20th century’s most vital artistic voices.

First known as a sought-after model in the late 1920s, Miller quickly moved behind the camera and became a key figure in the avant-garde circles of New York, Paris, London and Cairo.

After moving to London in 1939, Miller quickly became a leading fashion photographer for British Vogue. Shown alongside original magazines and archive material, the exhibition highlights her inventive work made during the Blitz, including striking images such as You will not lunch in Charlotte Street today (1940) and Fire Masks (1941). She later became one of the few accredited female war correspondents, documenting women’s roles on the home front, life on the front line, and the hardship faced by communities across post-liberation France and Germany.

The exhibition traces her extraordinary career—from her role in French surrealism to her pioneering fashion and war photography—and highlights lesser-known work, including striking images of the Egyptian landscape from the 1930s.

Featuring around 250 vintage and modern prints, many never shown before, the show reveals Miller’s poetic vision and fearless approach to her craft. As she once said, “It was a matter of getting out on a damn limb and sawing it off behind you.”

Spectrum is honoured to have been involved in production of this extensive exhibition, we truly enjoyed working on the modern prints aspect of the show. We’ve been fortunate to build a rich relationship with the Lee Miller Archives over the past decade, and we look forward to continuing our work together in the years ahead.
