Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2024: Lebohang Kganye’s

The esteemed Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize returns for its 28th year, widely recognised as one of the foremost international accolades for photographers. This year’s instalment pledges to captivate, stimulate, and enlighten. Additionally, the 2024 prize commemorates the two-decade-long partnership between Deutsche Börse and The Photographers’ Gallery, signifying a milestone in their collaboration.

This year’s international artists shortlisted are: VALIE EXPORT, Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Lebohang Kganye and Hrair Sarkissian. Each of the shortlisted artists all show the power of photography to explore, investigate and interrogate our world.

“This year’s submissions for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize once again show the power of photography to explore, investigate and interrogate our world.”

– Anne-Marie Beckmann, Director of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation

Lebohang Kganye’s (b. 1990, South Africa) photographic projects cross personal and collective histories. Her work Mohlokomedi wa Tora (2018) will be on display at The Photographers’ Gallery. In the large-scale installation, Kganye uses silhouettes and life-sized cut-out figures. Kganye considers the impact of her family’s migration, due to land acts and apartheid law, including the alteration of their surname. Through symbolic elements such as a central rotating light representing the Sesotho word for ‘light’, kganya, she illustrates her ancestral inheritance.

Spectrum were delighted to work with shortlisted artist Lebohang Kganye, to produce her intricate work on Xanita board – an engineered fibreboard manufactured from fibres recovered from recycled used cardboard boxes, via our creative Direct To Media printing service.

The winner of the £30,000 prize will be announced at an award ceremony at The Photographers’ Gallery on 16 May 2024, with the other finalists each receiving £5,000. Full details of the Prize exhibition and award evening will be announced in Spring 2024.
