Jude Lartey’: Land of The Morees Exhibition

La Foundation for the Arts launched their YOUNG ARTISTS SERIES this August with the opening of Land of The Morees, a solo exhibition by image-maker Jude Lartey, curated by Chantel Akworkor Thompson.

Jude Lartey’s unique solo show marks the launch of La Foundation’s YOUNG ARTISTS SERIES – an initiative to support and celebrate young creative Ghanaians. Ideally offering artists under the age of 25, opportunities to have their works seen on a larger scale and provide more avenues to have their voices heard and their creative talents nurtured and rewarded in the country.

Speaking about the motivation behind the Young Artists Series, Executive Director Chantel Akworkor Thompson explained  “The premise of this initiative is to demonstrate to everyone the benefits of artists sharing their creative practice at home, where it was first conceived and where it will best resonate with the audiences. Whilst we understand that at present, the opportunities abroad for artists are more lucrative, we are also aware of how damaging some of those experiences can be for artists.“ She also believes that the collection perfectly demonstrates how artists in Ghana can contribute to history making and the preservation of culture and traditions through their art making.

About Jude Lartey’: Land of The Morees Exhibition

The solo exhibition is a striking collection of 11 stunning, cinematic images that straddle the spontaneous and the curated centred by a large fishing canoe – installed in the supermarket turned gallery space in South La, Accra. For this significant showcase, Spectrum were delighted to work closely with Chantel and Jude as official print partners and support this exhibition by producing digital c-types matt prints for the series pieces on show.

An additional aspect to the exhibition is an accompanying critical essay : ‘Legacies of Light’,  contributed by the acclaimed author and performance poet, Nii Ayikwei Parkes. Reflecting on Lartey’s work, Parkes notes that Land of the Morees provides a thoughtful and dignified portrayal of the people from the coastal town of Moree, avoiding stereotypical or exploitative depictions.  “This exhibition marks the beginning of a promising career for Jude Lartey. His keen eye and deep relationship with light are evident in every photograph, showcasing a respect for history and humanity that resonates deeply.” says Parkes.
