British Culture Archive’s open-call photography project, ‘Documenting Your Community’, invites you to be inspired by the work of Tish Murtha, who captured life in the North East of England in the 1970s and 1980s.

Launched in conjunction with British Culture Archive: Documenting you Community, is an annual open showcase inviting photographers of all levels to be inspired by Tish Murtha’s work and take photographs of their communities, capturing life in contemporary Britain. Tish’s work was intimate and non-judgemental, and her community was always at the heart of her artistic output. The work chronicled the de-industrialisation of the North East and the rise of Thatcherism.
Documenting Your Community showcases photographs of communities capturing everyday life in contemporary Britain through an open call. The call is open to photographers of all levels to be inspired by Tish Murtha’s work and take photographs of their communities, capturing life in contemporary Britain. The archive would love to see photographs that capture your local area, shopkeepers or people in the park or pub.
The open-call project accepts entries throughout October and November each year, showcasing work on our website and social media channels with an exhibition the following year. Showing for the first time, the exhibition showcases highlights from the hundreds of submissions received when the project was launched in October 2023 and also includes a gallery of Tish Murtha’s celebrated work.
